Since its foundation in September 2006, Scherzo Brass – a brass quartet based in Greater Manchester – has enjoyed a remarkable run of successes and has established itself as one of the country’s leading young ensembles. The members originally met through the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain before progressing to the Royal Northern College of Music. Following their undergraduate studies, the quartet became the first ensemble to be accepted onto the prestigious Masters in Chamber Music at the RNCM. Since winning the title of British Open Quartet Champions 2007, as well as First Prize in the prestigious Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Competition 2008, Scherzo Brass has been in demand nationwide and enjoys a busy schedule of performances. Appearances have included the National Youth Brass Band Championships, the Black Dyke Brass Arts Festival, the RNCM Brass Festival and the Great Northern Brass Arts Festival at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.
The quartet is also committed to engaging with communities in the North West and to making live music available to children with special needs. They frequently visit schools across the area giving master classes and working as part of various outreach projects. Since 2009 they have undertaken work on behalf of the charity ‘Live Music Now’, which is the largest provider of music to the UK’s welfare, educational, justice and health sectors. Recent projects have culminated in performances involving children across the North West in some of the region’s major concert halls. Scherzo Brass recently toured the Channel Islands in February 2010 and Ireland in April 2010.
