The Gallimaufry Ensemble was formed in 2000 at the Royal Academy of Music and was subsequently awarded the prestigious Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellowship. Their acclaimed recording of Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s Five Distances was released on the Academy’s own label.

Described as “dazzling” (The Times) and “arresting” (The Guardian), Gallimaufry has performed at major venues such as the Purcell Room, Almeida Theatre, National Portrait Gallery, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Hackney Empire, Preston Minster, Colchester Institute and Lincolnshire International Music Festival. The Ensemble has toured to Ireland, Italy, Greece and France, including performances at the renowned Classique au Vert Festival in Paris.

Gallimaufry has given workshops demonstrating the workings of the wind quintet in situations as diverse as classrooms of children in inner city schools to the top of the BT Tower in London for corporate executives. This Summer they will be coaching the wind chamber music course at the Dartington International Summer School.

The ensemble enjoys working closely with composers, and has commissioned and premiered numerous new works. They have worked with composers Paul Patterson and John Woolrich, and with György Kurtág on his wind quintet, as part of the London Kurtág Festival.

For further details about the Ensemble and its members, visit their website where, by clicking on the ‘Audio’ link, you can also hear excerpts from many of the pieces they are going to play.

Full notes on the items to be played will be available in the printed programme on the night.

Please note that ensemble members Louisa Sparks (flute) and Alexia Camish ( french horn) are not available on this occasion, but we are extremely fortunate that two members of  another famous wind quintet, the Aurora Ensemble, have taken their places: Maxine Willis (flute) and Helen Shillito (french horn). For this reason, there is no photograph available of the group who are to play for us.  However photographs of the individual players will be shown in the programme notes.
