The Nutcracker and I

Tuesday 17th July 2018 at 7:30pm

to be held at ‘The Grand’, York St., Clitheroe, BB7 2DL

Please note the change of venue and day of the week from our usual concerts
The Grand is on the opposite side and about 200 yards up York Street from our usual Clitheroe Royal Grammar School venue

The Nutcracker and I is a groundbreaking multimedia performance for piano, ballerina and digital animation projected onto a gauze screen. The technical demands of this performance mean that we have had to move across the street from our usual venue to ‘The Grand’.

Many of you will remember virtuosic Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu who played for us in March 2015; at that time she was ranked by International Piano Magazine as one of the world’s top 30 pianists aged under 30 destined for a spectacular career. Not sure if she is still eligible, we don’t ask a lady’s age, but her rocketing international progress since has confirmed the magazine’s prediction. Ballerina Désirée Ballantyne trained at the Royal Ballet and is now a soloist with English National Ballet. Using ‘Google’ or another search engine will bring up links to both of them but do have a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLVkC1GUTaM.

Tchaikovsky’s enchanting ballet music features throughout and includes favourites such as Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Arabian Dance, Chinese Dance, Pax de Deux, and the Flower Waltz, in 15 virtuosic arrangements by composers such as Mikhail Pletnev, Stepan Esipoff, Percy Grainger and three brand new adaptations by Gavin Sutherland. The story is told by the ballerina and images projected onto a gauze screen. The world premiere was on 19 December 2017 at London’s Barbican Centre before moving to Moscow and with other international venues to come. It says a lot for Clitheroe Concert Society’s rapport with the professional artists that we engage, that Alexandra has agreed to bring her amazing production to Clitheroe. You would otherwise have to go abroad or to a major UK city to see and hear it.

After the performance the bar will be open for refreshments and pianist, ballerina and technical director have all agreed to talk to the audience.

As we did not budget for this late addition to our normal programme of concerts, we will have to charge everybody for admission. Tickets will be £17.50 for adults, with a discount to £15 for members of Clitheroe Concerts Society and to £10 for children and students aged 18 and under. We regret that on this occasion we are unable to offer our usual free admission to young people.
